Kids with Confidence is a program for children and young people aged 7 to 18 years who have a member of their family who is affected by mental illness.

The program provides a mixture of education and support. This is done through a range of family sessions, group programs, fun activities and resources including a quarterly newsletter. There are two parts to the program: one for children aged 7 to 12 years and one for adolescents aged 13 to 18 years.

For young people 7 to 12 years old

Education programs and school holiday activities are offered for children aged 7 to 12 years. The programs run for five weeks after school and focus on education about mental illness, mental health, feelings and coping strategies. Programs are held in Bendigo and in the Kyneton/Woodend area.

For young people 12 to 18 years old

A monthly activity program is offered to teenagers that uses a peer support model and includes a mix of fun activities and outings and mental health education. The program is held in Bendigo and is offered after school hours.

A further component of the teenager’s program is a music program held in conjunction with St Lukes in Bendigo. Young people are supported to write and record a CD or music video once a year at a local studio. A formal launch involving the children and their families enables them to showcase their talents.

Each program includes education about mental illness and mental health, and assists teenagers to develop coping strategies to manage difficult and stressful emotions. Christmas parties are held each year for families involved with the program.

Note:

  • Education/wellbeing programs for teenagers are held at different times based on the numbers in each group.
  • All children accessing any program receive a quarterly newsletter containing an update on what is happening in the program and information about mental health strategies.
