Programs for parents with a mental illness (parenting courses and programs)

Tresillian Early Intervention Home Visiting Program offers home visits to families in the Sydney Local Health District Eastern sector (in central Sydney metropolitan area from Balmain to Cantebury).

Visits are made specifically to parents where their mental illness and symptoms are affecting their ability to understand and respond to their children and family.

Priority is given to families with children 0 to two years, but they are able to assist with siblings up to five years old. Home visits can be flexible in terms of location. Parents can be supported by the child and family health nurse to attend appointments and playgroups.

NOTE: A health professional must refer you to this program using the referral form below. (e.g. a doctor, nurse, councellor, psychiatrist.

What does it involve?

  • Up to two months professional parenting support and guidance.
  • Specific observation of your child’s cues and developmental needs.
  • Identification of your parenting strengths.
  • The chance to use your parenting experiences to make changes and see successes.
  • Practice at using daily experience to learn to decision make and problem solve regarding your child’s care.
  • A home visit at a mutually agreeable time.
